Types of medical massage

  • - Sports massage

Sports massage is very popular type of therapy. It can be divided into three subcategories. Massage before competition, after competition and massage to keep fit.

First type of massage is carried out directly one hour or less before the competition, it is characterized by its high speed. It is designed to warm up and prepare tissues for forthcoming heavy physical activity and tests, when sportsmen squeeze all their strength in order to show the best results.

Second type of massage – massage after competition, it is designed to soothe tissues and to remove, to squeeze toxins out of them, such as lactic acid. It is characterized by smooth, slow and penetrating movements to relax the tissues, remove toxins and normalize functionality and internal blood circulation.

Third type of sports massage is supportive massage, it in its turn can be of two types: tonic and relaxing.

    • Tonic massage is carried out after the break of sports trainings, at the very beginning and throughout the sports season of the sportsman.
    • Relaxing massage is carried out after trainings upon completion of the sports season or after intense training course.

The third type of sports massage should be regarded as block therapy (6/8/12 sessions), otherwise it will have a low effect on the condition of the sportsman.

  • - Visceral massage or massage of internal organs

Massage of internal organs is a very serious work! Since it is targeted at certain internal organs: liver, kidneys, gall bladder, intestine, etc. This massage is carried out directly through the abdominal muscles and requires a robust cooperation between the therapist and the patient. Proper breathing allows to perform the painless procedure, and the observance of the necessary sequence will allow good work out and correction of required internal organ functioning.

Visceral massage is recommended for people who want to normalize metabolism, those suffering from pathologies of the gastrointestinal tract, and even from alcohol dependence.

The advantage of this type of therapy is that it can be used quite often, up to one to two times per day. And also, this type of therapy does not violate the integrity of the body and is not invasive.

  • - Health-improving massage

Health-improving massage is a relaxing massage. This type of massage is aimed at a direct impact on the nervous system, especially on the autonomic nervous system and stress relieve.

Techniques of this type of massage are characterized by smooth, rhythmic, penetrating movements. Often this massage is accompanied by special aromatic oils that enable to relax even more and relieve stress.

Given the above, this technique is recommended for fatigue, irritability, after long transatlantic flights. Health-improving massage allows you to recover and put your nerves into order!

  • - Scraping massage Gua sha

Scraping massage or massage Gua sha is one of the main directions of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The basis of this type of therapy, as well as of acupuncture, is the idea of meridians of internal organs. The main meridians are the projection of the internal organs, there are also so-called “wonderful” and the addirtional meridians, but that is another story.

Massage Gua sha is focused on scouring and normalization of the flow of energy in the meridians. The impact goes through the variation of different scrapers, the way of their holding and angle of slope to the body. The effect of therapy depends on the direction of movement of the scraper, the impact zone and the meridian on which the work is being performed, and the number of repetitions.

However, one important feature of this method should be noted – it leaves marks! Marks of reddening or appearance of “hematomas” on the skin. These are the marks of the congestion that leave the affected areas of the body, and, alas, no way round it.

  • - Shock and dynamic massage

Shock and dynamic massage is based on a vibration effect on deep tissues by heating through movement and vibration. Softening of soft tissues, removal of spasms blocks activates the lymph efflux, the movement of fluids and blood circulation with the return of normal neuro-signal communication. This is done by the local micro ruptures, synthesis of gases (nitrogen, carbon, oxygen) and release of mediator hormones (kinin, histamine, prostaglandin, bradykinin, etc.)

Methods of this type of therapy is either a hand of therapist (folded as a “scoop” or completely relaxed), or special materials on hand, such as bags of a certain weight, or a whip. This type of massage is the deepest, but it requires a long impact and tolerance on the part of the patient.

The main indications of shock and dynamic massage is the damage penetration depth and its chronic nature. Often this method of therapy is used in conjunction with vacuum cupping therapy or acupuncture, allowing to get to the “root” of the disease and to target it.

  • - Reflexology or point massage

The idea of this type of massage is based on the philosophy of traditional medicine, that all human organs, systems and even certain areas have distant areas of projection. Areas of projection are encountered throughout the body and they are especially densely located on the face, palms and soles of the feet.

Influencing specific bioactive points or areas on the human body which are projection of and are responsible for a certain organ, or related to certain anatomical system, the therapist is able to change settled, habitual, pathological process in distant, sometimes inaccessible areas of the body. Influencing these points and zones, the therapist can influence and correct the organ, associated with the impact zone.

This type of therapy is recommended when, for whatever reasons, a direct impact is impossible or pathology is strongly rooted and requires multiple approache to eliminate it successfully.

  • - Swedish massage

The founder of the Swedish massage was a Swedish osteopath Ling, Per Henrik (1776-1839 гг.), herefrom this massage was named as Swedish. He noted that if to work out soft tissues very well, then manually osteopathic methods of influence become much more efficient, or the need for their conduct completely disappears. And then only one massage for normalization of tissue function is enough.

Swedish massage is focused on the work with soft tissues on the human body, proximate joints and on patient’s limbs. It includes multiple techniques, aimed at neuromuscular interaction and normalization of neuronal connections between the human brain and a specific muscle.

  • - Massage of deep tissues

This type of massage is very deep and penetrating, mainly aimed at the areas near the spine, buttocks and collar zone. In depth, closer to the bone, these carnose areas contain the mass of small muscles, which are hidden from the surface by the bigger muscles. Deep muscles are very important for complete pain relief and return of functionality. Only specially aimed massage and its techniques allow to reach and correct those hard-to-get places.

Massage of deep tissues recommended for muscle strangulation and congestion. Most often, this massage is used for sedentary workers, for example, in front of a computer, and used to correct and straighten posture and relieve tension.
